4.2 million views for My Only, and undivided domination of the Japanese trends. SixTONES offers a fascinating window into a market that plays by its own rules, and that the rest of the world ultimately knows very poorly. The group belongs to the STARTO stable, formerly Johnny's, the institution that shaped Japanese male pop for decades. A small historical detail explains a lot, the agency long prohibited its artists' music videos from being posted online, a scarcity strategy unthinkable elsewhere. The digital turn taken in recent years released a colossal domestic audience all at once, and SixTONES is one of its main beneficiaries, stringing together million-view videos within days. Comparison with neighboring K-pop illuminates the model's singularity. Where Korean groups are engineered for export from the writing stage, with English hooks and worldwide strategies, boy-band J-pop targets first and foremost its national audience. These 4 million views are almost exclusively Japanese, and relative to the country's population, they represent a penetration rate few Western artists achieve at home. Two neighboring industries, two opposite philosophies, and neither seems ready to copy the other. Japan remains the world's second music market while caring rather little about what gets listened to elsewhere, a form of cultural sovereignty our data highlights week after week.
